I subacquei greci hanno scoperto il relitto di un sottomarino italiano 80 anni dopo essere stato affondato dalle forze alleate nel Mar Egeo durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
Il Jantina, che era salpato dall'isola greca di Leros con 48 marinai a bordo, affondò il 5 luglio 1941, dopo essere stato colpito dai siluri sparati dal sottomarino britannico HMS Torbay.
È stata scoperta il mese scorso da Kostas Thoctarides, uno dei subacquei più famosi della Grecia, e dalla sua squadra, a sud dell'isola di Mykonos, a una profondità di 103 metri, utilizzando un veicolo subacqueo telecomandato, il ROV Super Achilles, che ha effettuato una dettagliata ispezione visiva del relitto.
"La storia navale è come un puzzle, e questo fa parte di quel puzzle", ha detto a Reuters Thoctarides, un esperto marittimo. "Lo scontro tra due sottomarini è un raro evento navale".
L'identità di Jantina è stata verificata utilizzando i documenti dell'Ufficio storico navale italiano, ha affermato Thoctarides.
È il quarto sottomarino individuato e identificato da Thoctarides.

Greek divers have discovered the wreckage of an Italian submarine 80 years after it was sunk by the Allied Forces in the Aegean Sea during World War Two.
The Jantina, which had sailed from the Greek island of Leros with 48 sailors on board, sank on July 5, 1941, after being hit by torpedoes fired by British submarine HMS Torbay.
She was discovered last month by Kostas Thoctarides, one of Greece’s best-known divers, and his team, south of the island of Mykonos at a depth of 103 meters using a remotely operated underwater vehicle, the ROV Super Achilles, which carried out a detailed visual inspection of the wreckage.
“Naval history is like a puzzle, and this is part of that puzzle,” Thoctarides, a maritime expert, told Reuters. “The confrontation of two submarines is a rare naval event.”
Jantina’s identity was verified using records from Italy’s Naval History Office, Thoctarides said.
She is the fourth submarine located and identified by Thoctarides.
